Vivacious and outspoken, Priyanka, rather than brother Rahul, was expected to make the debut on behalf the fifth generation. But now it is clear she has willingly taken a backseat to the Gandhi son. She admitted as much to reporters stalking the family in Amethi.

But, yes, she would be campaigning for the Congress, though, as she clarified quickly, not a rath, a la Lal Krishna Advani: "I''ll campaign wherever my party asks me to, but not on a rath. I''m not a rath person."

Priyanka also denied that the drama around Rahul was deliberate, so she could be fielded as a surprise, last-minute candidate from Lucknow. Asked if she was going to take on Atalji, she laughed, saying, “Sure come to the Lucknow collectorate at 6 am tomorrow and watch me file my nomination." (No collectorate opens before 10 am)

Later, she said that she was too bogged down by domestic responsibility right now to get into electoral politics. She said her two children were her immediate priority, and they, especially the daughter, needed her attention.

Ever since Rahul''s candidature was announced, there has been speculation that a rath had been fitted out for Priyanka, complete with a hydraulic lift and other luxuries. Further that it would be a superior version of the one Advani has been travelling in during his yatra. Congress sources, in fact, claimed to have seen the vehicle.

If Priyanka is to set out on a long, gruelling trip, she would need to do so in comfort. But it is possible she doesn''t want to call it a rath yatra, as that would implicitly mean the Congress can only imitate its opponents.

<formid=367815></formid=367815>
